Winter’s icy breath has a way of transforming the world into a glistening wonderland. However, as the snow blankets the streets, the need for warmth becomes more than a comfort—it becomes a necessity, especially for students facing the chill without adequate winter gear.
Consider Emily, a bright-eyed student in the Madison Metropolitan School District. For her, the arrival of winter brings not just the excitement of snowflakes but also the challenge of navigating the cold without a proper coat. For students like Emily, essential winter gear represents more than just warmth; it symbolizes access to education, consistent attendance, and engagement in all aspects of school life, regardless of the season.

For the past two years, through the Teacher Support Network, we’ve invested in coats, snow pants, boots, gloves, mittens, and hats. This winter, our commitment more than doubled from $20,000 to $50,000, a testament to the urgent need felt within the community. The increased budget, coupled with a generous discount from Lands’ End, ensured every MMSD school received essential winter items. New this year, we provided the Transition Education Program with a winter gear budget to extend warmth and support for over 1,000 students experiencing homelessness.
Thanks to your unwavering support, the Teacher Support Network is a beacon of warmth for students like Emily during these chilly winter months. Our efforts don’t pause with the melting snow. The need for support is year-round, and so is our commitment. From innovative teaching resources to fostering a positive and inclusive school environment, we stand by our students and teachers every day. February and March will see a spike in demand for school essentials, but our eyes are set on the broader horizon – ensuring all students, like Emily, thrive every season.
Last year, the Teacher Support Network provided $350,000 in resources, yet the demand continues to grow. Your continued support is vital. Together, we can be a constant force for empowerment in our students’ lives.
