A Principal Experience: Step Into Our Schools. Invest in Their Future.

October 30, 2025 | 8:00 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.
Morning visits at MMSD schools · Luncheon & program at the Alliant Energy Center

What is A Principal Experience?
A Principal Experience offers Madison-area business and community leaders a unique, behind-the-scenes opportunity to step into the role of a Madison Metropolitan School District (MMSD) principal.
As a Principal Partner, you’ll spend the morning alongside a principal in one of Madison’s 52 public schools. From classroom visits to leadership meetings and hallway conversations, you’ll gain a firsthand view of the daily decisions, challenges, and triumphs that define our public schools.
After your school visit, all Principal Partners and their host principals will gather for a luncheon and program at the Alliant Energy Center, joined by MMSD leadership and members of the Madison Public Schools Foundation (MPSF) Board.

A Re-imagined Tradition with Deep Roots
The Madison Public Schools foundation has proudly hosted A Principal Experience since 2004. Originally named Principal for a Day, over the years it became a signature event for both school leaders and community partners, offering a unique, personal look into Madison’s public schools.
Following a pause during the pandemic and the transition to current district leadership, we’re excited to relaunch this impactful program. The return of A Principal Experience marks a renewed commitment to connecting community leaders with the daily realities, successes, and challenges facing our principals, teachers, and students and to build stronger partnerships that support positive, inclusive learning environments at all our schools.
“I am excited for the return of A Principal Experience. This program is a powerful way to connect our community to our schools. As our guests walk with our principals, they will gain a unique perspective about the incredible work happening inside of our schools every day.”
Joe Gothard, Ed.D
Superintendent of the Madison Metropolitan School District
Why Participate?
A Principal Experience is more than a one-day shadowing opportunity — it’s a catalyst for deeper engagement with public education and the people who lead our schools.
This event is designed for community members who have the capacity and potential to become long-term champions for Madison’s schools, including:
- Leadership from current Adopt-a-School partners
- Business leaders connected to Schools Make Madison and other sponsor programs
- MMSD alumni and community influencers who want to give back in meaningful ways
- Individuals ready to build stronger ties between the private sector and our public schools
By participating, you will:
- Understand the strengths and systemic challenges of public education
- Discover how your organization or network can support our schools to overcome some of the barriers
- Build relationships with MMSD leaders, educators, and fellow community partners

The Luncheon: Where Connections Become Commitments
While the morning spent at school provides a powerful experience, the luncheon is where reflection turns into action. This portion of the day — held at the Alliant Energy Center — is essential to maximizing the impact of the event.
During lunch, Principal Partners will:
- Reflect on their experiences alongside fellow participants and school principals
- Hear from MMSD leadership and Superintendent Joe Gothard about district goals and needs
- Share insights, ideas, and feedback that help shape future partnerships
- Learn how to become an Advocate, Sponsor, or Adopt-a-School partner
The luncheon is more than a debrief — it’s a space for collaboration, inspiration, and community-building.
Our Goals for 2025
- Reignite and expand Adopt-a-School partnerships
- Inspire new Sponsors, Champions, and Advocates
- Increase awareness of both school strengths and systemic challenges
- Deepen community understanding of the role and impact of the Madison Public Schools Foundation
