A Principal Experience Returns Better than Ever
A Principal Experience 2025: Building Strong Schools Through Partnership
On October 30, the Madison Public Schools Foundation proudly hosted the return of A Principal Experience, a signature event that connects community and business leaders with school principals for a firsthand look at leadership in action. Participants spent the morning shadowing MMSD principals, gaining insight into the dedication it takes to lead our public schools. From recording morning announcements to joining a field trip and seeing teachers and students working in classrooms, principal partners experienced what it truly means to lead with purpose, people, and pride.
The day concluded with a luncheon at the Alliant Energy Center, where speakers — including Downtown Madison, Inc. President Jason Ilstrup, MPSF Board Chair Jill Jokela, Foundation President Melinda Heinritz, and Superintendent Gothard — reflected on the power of collaboration between schools, businesses, and community partners.

An Inside Look Into Madison’s Schools
The day began with community partners shadowing principals across the Madison Metropolitan School District. Participants spent the morning experiencing what it means to lead a school — from welcoming students and supporting staff to building environments where everyone can learn, grow, and thrive.
Several guests also saw the impact of Madison School & Community Recreation (MSCR), a vital part of MMSD that provides enrichment opportunities for learners of all ages across Madison. These visits offered firsthand insight into the leadership, coordination, and care that keep schools running each day.
One highlight came from a visit to O’Keeffe Middle School, where a community leader partnered with Principal Emily Hurd to record the school’s “Thankful Thursday” announcements, join a school-wide field trip to the Overture Center, and experience Mariachi Rock Revolution — a high-energy celebration of culture and music. Moments like these reminded participants that behind every lesson and every event lies a deep commitment to connection and belonging.
A Luncheon of Reflection and Renewal
After the school visits, attendees gathered at the Alliant Energy Center for a luncheon program that celebrated the day’s experiences and the partnerships that make them possible. Foundation staff welcomed guests and invited them to participate in a values activity before taking their seats for the midday program.
Jason Ilstrup, President of Downtown Madison, Inc., served as Master of Cermonies during the luncheon and

reflected on his own experience as a Principal Partner, noting, “Strong schools are the foundation of a strong downtown and a strong city. When we work together with trust, respect, and shared goals, we achieve outcomes none of us could reach alone.”
Guests were encouraged to share stories from their morning visits over lunch — what surprised, inspired, or moved them — sparking thoughtful conversation across tables.
Celebrating Partnership and Community Commitment
Following lunch, MPSF Board Chair Jill Jokela thanked the event’s generous sponsors, with special recognition for TruStage, the title sponsor since A Principal Experience began in 2004, and Summit Credit Union, the Foundation’s exclusive 25th Anniversary Sponsor in the financial industry.
Jokela reflected on her long relationship with the Foundation, sharing how volunteering in local classrooms shaped her commitment to public education. “When community and business leaders spend even a short time in our schools,” she said, “they see firsthand the incredible work our principals, teachers, and staff do every single day. Yes, our schools face challenges, but there are also countless moments of joy, creativity, and perseverance happening in classrooms across Madison.”
Looking Forward: Turning Connection into Action
Foundation President Melinda Heinritz and MMSD Superintendent Dr. Joe Gothard closed the program by emphasizing the power of continued partnership. Dr. Gothard reflected on the morning’s visits and called on attendees to stay engaged through initiatives like the Foundation’s impactful Adopt-a-School program.
“This program is a powerful way to connect our community to our schools,” Dr. Gothard said. “As our guests walk with our principals, they gain a unique perspective about the incredible work happening inside our schools every day.”
Jason Ilstrup returned to the podium to close with a message of gratitude and purpose: “When businesses and schools work hand in hand, our community becomes stronger, more connected, and more resilient.”

Together for Madison’s Future
Participants in A Principal Experience left with a shared sense of optimism and a reminder that partnership is more than participation; it’s a promise to invest in the success of every student.
The Madison Public Schools Foundation extends heartfelt thanks to the principals, educators, sponsors, and community leaders who made this year’s event possible. Together, we’re building stronger schools and a stronger Madison.
